When Rowley came to Ja *

You have to hand it to us. When Trini Prime Minister Keith Rowley made his visit to Kingston Town over the recent week and “Rowleyed” himself into peace-making to avoid a trade war, we received him well. When it comes to “sweet mout”, we can’t be beaten. So although it was just the other day that we had leaders of commerce and industry letting Trinidad and Tobago know where to get off in the matter of trade and immigration between our nations—especially the fact that in the area of trade and commerce T&T comes out much better than we do—we put on a good show. We still remember the “ATM” remark of the twin-island republic’s former prime minister. In other words, they get the cash, seeing as how they succeed from the lucrative market of goods manufactured in Trinidad which are sold here, while there is no reciprocal market for our ‘made in Jamaica’ goods there.

That stirred up ill feelings which were becoming deeper between our two nations. At one time, we started intense agitation for a boycott of Trinidadian goods and creating a trade war from our side.
