COMPETING without the services of injured top player Fabien Whitfield, Trinidad and Tobago managed to secure the penultimate of seven places in the final round of NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) qualifying for the Olympic Games yesterday in St Lucia. This country’s men had already been assured of advancing when they trounced St Kitts/Nevis 3-0 after a first-round bye when the tournament served off on Friday to advance to the last four.
And after losing 3-0 against Guatemala in Saturday’s semifinals, T&T went down twice yesterday to finish sixth. Coming up against Nicaragua for a place the third-place playoff, Williams, who combined with Whitfield to earn a silver medal in the fourth leg of this year’s NORCECA Beach Tour in Costa Rica last month, drew first blood by nosing out Denis Lopez and Gerson Contreras 15-21, 21-14, 15-13.
