Scary trip, water taxi stalls in Gulf

Newsday spoke with a passenger, who identified herself as Kim, about the incident.

“Even before boarding, I was sceptical about its seaworthiness because the Trini Flash hasn’t been in service for months. Then from the time we left Port of Spain, I knew something was wrong because the engine was much slower and louder,” she said.

The crew’s failure to communicate with passengers earned them a failing grade from Kim.

“It was very unprofessional of them not to provide an update on the situation. After we had been stalled for a while, other passengers asked what going on. A crew member just said, ‘It back working.’ That’s when the boat started to move slowly. No further explanation, no announcement over the PA (public address) system, nothing.” Before the Trini Flash started moving again, Kim got scared that the burning smell meant something was on fire, so she reached for the life jacket under her seat.

But she couldn’t get it out. The clip keeping it in place was stuck.

She said, “I asked a crew member how to get out the life jacket. He just pointed to a leaflet in front of me but that doesn’t tell you how to loosen the clip, only how to put on the life jacket.

What kind of help is that?” Kim lamented that faulty vessels mean the sailing times have gotten longer and longer.

“If you don’t count the 15 minutes we sat in the water near to Petrotrin, this sailing took an hour and 20 minutes.

It used to be 45 minutes when the water taxis were working properly. Now the average is 90 minutes. This is getting ridiculous now,” Kim said. The water may have been calm during this particular sailing but Kim compared the service and lack of information to very choppy waters.

Newsday attempted to speak with Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan about this incident but calls to his phone went unanswered.

This is not the first time the Trini Flash has had problems. Back in February, the National Infrastructure Development Company announced that it was removing the water taxi from service due to prolonged sailing times.
