Dillon, man in video warning come face-to-face

enterprise   Residents remained inside their houses yesterday as National Security Minister Edmund Dillon led a walkabout through Enterprise, Chaguanas. The visit comes a week after a fiery protest rocked the community following the shooting death of Sylvan Alexis, the brother of slain Enterprise gang leader Selwyn “Robocop” Alexis, who was killed in July last year. In one of the streets of the community, however, a popular resident, Abdul Wakeel, alias “Crisis”, spoke passionately about what was going on.

He recently made a video which was posted to Facebook in which he called the names of specific police officers in the Chaguanas Division whom he accused of taking bribes and working with some of the gangs.

When the group of officials entered Crown Trace they met Wakeel. Dillon approached him and asked if he was the one that made the videos which scared the population. “You were the one in the video acting in a certain way that bring this population in a sense of unease.

Don’t blame anybody for that video, you and you alone made a choice to speak those words,” Dillon said.

The minister did not look or sound pleased. Grateful for visit  Wakeel replied: “The problem is not just the violence but the problem is what leads to the violence.” He continued: “You only saw the bad things about me but you didn’t see the video where I went up and was revealing all of the police officers in crookedness and who getting paid by certain drug lords who bringing in all the guns.

I went live and the video went live.” Asked by ACP Dick if he was prepared to hand over the information to the police he replied: “Without a doubt.” Under the glare of cameras, Wakeel continued: “People keep saying we are the ones in Crown Trace who bringing in all the drugs and who paying the police who bringing in the guns and then they get this video I make in 2015 and they putting up the video in the media to make me look bad as I exposing all the corruption in the community.” Prior to the arrival of all the officials police and soldiers were seen patrolling through the area.

The Express made its own walkabout and spoke to some of the residents who remained in their homes. One man lit a cigarette, stating he was “grateful for this visit”. Asked he would be saying anything to the police or the Government officials present he replied flatly, “No.” Other residents on their way home and encountering the team of officials remained in their vehicles and cheered on Dillon as he passed but they never got out.

Others remained behind their gates and fences and looked on at the procession but said nothing. Still, others only spoke to the reporters who lagged behind the walkabout and offered solutions. One man who spoke to the Express said it was a lack of employment opportunities that was fuelling the violence in the area.

Speaking with reporters he said, “I saw the commotion with the Minister (Dillon) and I came and met with him and he invited me to come along with him.” Abdullah added that he “was able to get a commitment from the two warring factions in Enterprise to move forward peacefully and those discussions will continue in due course”.

“Both sides want peace actually. They want the thing to stop. They want the killings to stop but because of the unwillingness to sit and talk and the lack of the support of the Imams in the community.” “What is essential at this point in time,” he continued, “is that both the Government and the TTPS need to be on board with this whole initiative as well but I will also say that other individuals who are carded to be part of these discussions are willing to sit down.” Abdullah also spoke about what he described as “misinformation,” making the rounds through social media which features men who describe themselves as part of the warring factions in Enterprise.

For instance, he said the videos being posted on Facebook had been taken quite a while now and people have gone on the site and brought back those videos back on Facebook to make it appear that it was very recent.

He added, “and the other thing is that the so called Unruly Isis we keep hearing about. Those guys never gave themselves that name and they certainly would want to dissociate themselves from that name.” He continued, “I did go with them today (yesterday) and I saw them, I saw the sermon of the Imam and I certainly do believe in my heart that this group of Muslims in Chaguanas are really actually a beacon of hope and a mercy on the Chaguanas community so I think we should change that name from Unruly Isis to them being a mercy and a beacon of hope.”.
