It wasn?t the sort of roster news that grabs headlines, nothing that involved Giancarlo Stanton or anyone else on the Marlins? big-league roster.
But the Marlins, in the process of filling their 40-man roster, made a minor trade on Monday with the New York Yankees and protected several of their prospects from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft in the process.
First, the Marlins dealt right-handed pitcher Michael King and international draft pool money to the Yankees for left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith and infielder Garrett Cooper.
They then added their two new acquisitions, as well as four minor-leaguers, outfielder Braxton Lee and right-handed pitchers Merandy Gonzalez, Pablo Lopez and James Needy to their 40-man roster. The move protects those players from next months Rule 5 Draft.
